Routes

Join a thousand other riders in bicycling flat, rural Mathews County, located on the western shore of the southern Chesapeake Bay. Never more than ½ mile from water, Mathews features quiet and picturesque roadways for cycling.

 

The Tour de Chesapeake is perfect as a family biking adventure. It will also give the intermediate rider and the experienced veteran a perfect spring warm-up. Various routes are available on the Tour de Chesapeake, so that you can choose the mileage you desire. The Tour de Chesapeake is as close to a “create your own personal tour” as you’ll find. Mileage options range between 15 - 62 miles. 

All routes have fully-supported rest stops, route signage and SAG support. Routes open at 7:30 am and close at 5 pm. 

The Tour de Chesapeake Tour Book that you receive at registration will have a color map and complete details on all of the rides available. Be sure to attend orientation when you arrive.

Orientation Sessions
Everyone is encouraged to attend a 20 minute Orientation. These will be held every 30 minutes in the classrooms of Thomas Hunter Middle School during registration hours. Each session will answer your specific questions about the Tour de Chesapeake and will also cover the basics of safe cycling, especially in a large group. One of the primary goals of BikeWalk Virginia is bicycling education and safety. Plan your arrival at registration to include ample time for an orientation.

Terrain and Bicycle
Mathews County is FLAT! Either road bikes, hybrids, or mountain bikes are suitable. Tandems are welcome. Shorter routes have been planned for families with children. Make sure your bike is in good working order. Bike repair services will be available for a nominal charge. Remember, for your safety, helmets are required for all riders.

Cues

Click on the links below to download cyclist's cue sheets for the routes.  Please keep in mind that the routes are not final until the day of the event. Conditions may warrant changes in the route. In situations of conflict between the cue sheets and the signage, please follow the signage. These routes are certified as safe by BikeWalk Virrginia during the Tour de Chesapeake event only.  Any use of the cue sheets at other times is at one's own risk.
